History of Slots

In 1887, a man named Charles Fey made the first slot machine. The first machines were manufactured by hand by Fey himself and placed in the local gambling palaces on a 50% rental basis. So in addition to being the inventor, Fey was also the first proprietor of the machines. The original symbols included the standard playing card imagery we are all used to - hearts, diamonds and spades- along with bells, horseshoes and a star. This original machine can still be seen today in a collection at the Liberty Belle Saloon and Restaurant in Reno Nevada, which is owned and operated by Fey's own lineage.

Slot machines owe a lot of their popularity to the fact that they can be played at the player's own pace with no skill required. They have evolved over the years from simple three reel machines with each reel containing 20 symbols to the random number generated machines in today's casinos with each reel sometimes containing hundreds of symbols.

The most important feature in older slot machines is the number of reels and the number of symbols. The fewer the number of reels and symbols, the easier it is to get a winning combination.

There are basically two different types of slot machines; flat rate and progressives. Flat rate machines have a set jackpot payoff while progressive machine's jackpot continues to grow with each coin inserted until hit.

Most slot machines are programmed to payout between 80 and 99 percent of coins played which includes jackpot payoffs. Online slots are well known for the high payout percentages. After all it is more costly to maintain hundreds of slotmachines than to maintain 'just' the gambling software. Online slots are becoming more and more popular. Online Jackpots are therefore increasing rapidly.
